Nina Limón
“
Artist Statement by Nina Limón (Andreína Maldonado)
I make interdisciplinary artwork that is non-attached to form, time or space, spontaneous as is, it is always unfolding in the moment through improvisation and set structures. My inspiration comes from three main sources: Cosmology (Connection, and Synergy), Ecofeminism (Earth & Mother), and the Immigrant Experience (Longing & Hope). These points of convergence manifest in the exploration of our place in the universe, the relationship between Nature and Womanhood, and the thirst for Social Justice for Indigenous and POC communities, animals, and nature. I hope to take the viewer to a different reality, to question place and time, feel empathy, and remember our purpose and birthright in this fabric of collective consciousness.
As a formally trained musician and dancer, I express a unique and authentic aesthetic by writing and composing my own music, and creating choreography inspired in traditional and contemporary forms. I am interested in the way that a performance can evoke feelings through smells, textures, and visual projections. I strive to harmonize links between music, dance, and acting into a coherent whole. Collaboration with other artists and the community is vital in my artistic process. It is my vision to bring together a diversity of voices and bodies, to uplift the multiplicity of experiences and insights, and actively disrupt beliefs/systems of hyper individuality in the art world."
